#182 Finding the missing piece

Find that missing piece

As Crafters we are often on a long path, and in the process we carry many tools with us to help us along the way, but in spite of what we possess, we are often missing something.  Besides the endpath that we are seeking, we usually don't realize what ever else we are missing, but it is usually something that we need to overcome a critical and path stopping obstacle in our way.

The Missing Piece is a Noun because it is a person, place or thing, but it can be virtually anything.  Whether object, individual or location, that piece is what can make the difference to a full speed run to the finish line and a sudden halt in our momentum

When I said that the missing piece could be anything, I mean it.  The missing piece could be an idea, a muse or an agent or manager.  It could be an actor or actress to help you film the greatest scene ever.  It could be a computer to help you visualize a 3D model or edit footage from a film you shot.  As creative types, we are all Carvers, and our needs will vary depending on what we are trying to do; so I can't tell you what that missing piece is.

As a writer, I have attempted to write in several different fields; and as such I have realized missing pieces that I needed for each one.  Take for instance comics.  It is difficult to make it in comics as a writer unless there is a good artist to accompany that.  (Difficult but not impossible).  Take Robert Kirkman (Writer for Invincible and the critically acclaimed The Walking Dead)  He had Cory Walker (who served as a Co-creator) and later on Ryan Ottley who does the artist duties to this day.
Without a qualified aritst, I'm sure Kirkman would have had a more difficult time getting recognized.

The missing piece is often attached to how complete your particular creative piece is.  It also can be determined by exactly what you need to succeed.

That missing piece is both an obstacle and something to be obtained.

For instance imagine that you are walking along your path and you encounter a cliff where the bridge is gone.  There is no way around it.  The only way to reach your endpath is by transversing this cliff.

The cliff is scalable and there is a bottom, but too far to jump across.  In this case the missing piece would seem to be the bridge that stops your forward motion; but you may not have the means to build a bridge, quite a few of us don't,  however if you fixate on the wrong thing then you will only waste time chasing a solution that cannot be found.  The cliff is the methaphor for the problem.  The solution is of course the missing piece.

The Missing Piece isn't to build a bridge to replace the damaged one (at least not if you are unable to build a bridge)  The missing piece in this case is the process by which you get across.  It is merely the missing piece for that situation.

The missing piece is one of many things remember.    You may never know what that missing piece is, until you run into it.

But find it you must.

How can you find what you can't see and don't know about? Just look at what is missing and figure out what needs to be in place.  There is always something around that stops us from moving forward,  but it is up to us to figure out what that is.
